Continuing with where we left, here is the second installation of 25 useful tips for couples Trying To Conceive (Part I of the series can be accessed here).
Cut down on the consumption of alcohol as it is linked with poor health of the sperm.
In case you cannot abstain from drinking, limit your alcohol consumption to not more than two drinks a day, which means 1 ½ ounces of spirits, five ounces of wine and 12 ounces of beer.
Cut down on the intake of refined carbohydrates such as those found in breads.
Consume beverages like coffee, tea and soda in moderation
Trans meats can be harmful for the health of the sperm
Complex carbohydrates such as those in baked products need to be avoided.
Soy consumption leads to reduction in sperm production
Marijuana usage may give you a temporary high but it is not good at all for your reproductive system as it leads to low sperm count and poor development of sperm.
Maintain a healthy weight. Study after study has linked excess weight with fertility problems. Exercising regularly and consumption of a balanced diet should see you through.
Just as excess weight is harmful for the health of the sperm, being underweight can be as detrimental.
Keep a limit on how much you exercise. Putting too much effort in exercising can lead to reduction in testosterone in the body. Working out for 30 minutes five times a week is considered as optimum.
Steroid usage tends to affect fertility as it leads to shrinkage of testicles.
Exposing testicles to too much heat can be detrimental. Wearing tight briefs, long hot sauna visits, and electric blankets should be avoided.
Usage of illicit drugs is extremely detrimental for the health of your sperm.
Check with your doctor and ensure that the prescription drugs you are using or going to use do not affect fertility.
Avoid too much stress as that can lead to erectile dysfunction and reduction in quality and quantity of sperm
A number of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) can have a tremendous negative impact on fertility
Aging can lead to fertility related issues. If you are on the other side of 30s or 40s, you may need medical assistance in the form of IVF.
Natural, low processed foods should be preferred over processed food items.
Consume more oatmeal.
Consume more brown rice.
Consume more milk as it is a great source of calcium
Consume more orange juice, for the same reason as above
Low-fat dairy products are good for boosting fertility
Multivitamins containing zinc, calcium and zinc can give a boost to fertility.
